Spiess Research Room - The Spiess Research Center’s mission is to collect and preserve printed materials, photographs, and other archival items pertaining to the history and development of Fulton County. Researchers are welcome to visit and use the book and archival collections located in the Spiess Research Center at the Museum. Copyright regulations apply to all materials held in the Center’s collections. The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming to the laws of copyright. Cellular phones, digital scanners, cameras, or other devices intended to photograph or copy resources may not be used without the prior approval of an authorized staff member or the Director of the Museum. A fee may be assessed for each copy or image obtained by the researcher. Additional research policies may apply.
The Center is open during regular Museum hours, however to help ensure a successful research experience, researchers are encouraged to schedule their visits in advance by contacting the Museum at 419-337-7922 or info@museumoffultoncounty.org. If a personal visit is not possible, Center staff may assist by answering research questions via e-mail or telephone. Fulton County Genealogical Society Research Materials - The Fulton County Genealogical Society was founded in 1978 and in 1980, received its charter from the Ohio Genealogical Society. In late 2024, the group reformed as the Fulton County Genealogy Group of the Fulton County Historical Society, Inc. which retains affiliation with the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The Group’s collection consists of over 1,300 books and over 200 rolls of microfilm located at the Evergreen Community Library, 253 Maple Street, Metamora, Ohio. Research appointments at the library are available with advance notice by contacting www.fultoncoogs.org/contact-us. The microfilmed records include newspapers for towns in the county through 1910; birth and death records beginning in 1867; marriage records from 1864 (although the county was formed in 1850, a fire in July 1864 destroyed many early records). The collection also includes family histories, county histories, obituaries, tombstone inscription books, as well as a wide variety of other Ohio county records.
The Group provides the forms for persons wishing to apply for First Families of Fulton County, Civil War Families, and Centennial Families along with information regarding the appropriate documentation for these designations.
Information regarding meetings of the Fulton County Genealogy Group can be found on the Group’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/OGSFulton/
